Apple to Invest $500B in US, Create 20K R&D Jobs: Apple plans to invest $500 billion in the US over the next four years. This includes building a large AI server factory in Texas. Apple did not say how much of this money will go to its current supply chain, which includes Corning, a glass maker for iPhones based in Kentucky.Apple’s decision comes after rumors that Tim Cook, the company’s CEO, met with former President Donald Trump recently.Since many Apple products are made in China, they are subject to 10% tariffs imposed by the Trump administration.
Apple had previously received permission to do this during Trump’s first term.This announcement is similar to Apple’s 2018 promise to invest $350 billion into the US economy over five years during the Trump administration.Many parts, including semiconductors from Broadcom, Skyworks Solutions, and Qorvo, are still made in the US even if most Apple products are put together outside the country.
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. TSMC owns the facility in Arizona where Apple has started mass producing its own chips. Important industrial policy initiatives during Trump’s first term included bringing TSMC to Arizona and endorsing the CHIPS Act, which sought to increase US semiconductor manufacturing. Additionally, Apple announced to open an academy in Michigan, where its engineers and academic specialists will provide free training courses for small and medium-sized businesses.
